Podcast 245: Lapalux
Words: Shawn Reynaldo
It wasn’t that long ago that Lapalux (a.k.a. Stuart Howard) was just another young UK producer perking up people’s ears with a hard-to-define mix of low-end-heavy, but undeniably experimental, sounds. Even when we tabbed him as a Bubblin’ Up artist last summer, largely on the strength on his then-fresh Many Faces Out of Focus EP, the full extent of his potential was only beginning to reveal itself. Then came this year’s When You’re Gone EP, released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, which displayed a whole new level of sophistication and a real penchant for sonic whimsy. With this kind of skill at his disposal, we were curious to see exactly what Lapalux could do if tasked with putting together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Although he doesn’t actually DJ that often—he prefers to perform live—Lapalux quickly proves that’s he’s more than capable of assembling a compelling mix. His selections come from both sides of the Atlantic and could individually be tagged with an assortment of inadequate genre names—bass music, beat music, witch house, screw, experimental—but ultimately, it’s clear that they all bear some relationship to hip-hop while only rarely sounding anything like traditional rap music. He’s clearly taking notes from a rich palette of influences, and though this podcast still doesn’t allow us to put Lapalux in a neat little box, it does provide an interesting window into the sounds that make him tick.

IA MIX 58 // Kuhn

IA MIX 58 Kuhn by INVERTED AUDIO

Bennett Kuhn, a lanky 23-year-old from New York with lots of love for cats and subwoofers among other things, is currently hard at work on a bunch of new musical projects including a jungle single to be released this summer as a white label under a secret moniker, another EP for Civil Music and a debut EP of Mt. Desert Island, a collaboration with Brooklyn-based songwriter/lyricist/singer/guitarist and best friend Jesse Kohn.

Kuhn’s mix offers a vast insight into his musical tastes, it is “a soundtrack to active remembering” featuring lots of unreleased material from Astro Nautico affiliates: Space Ghost, Moist Ghost, RAJA, Time Wharp and Young Montana? The artwork for the mix (‘Elephant Graveyard’) comes from the famous myth that old elephants naturally depart from their groups and travel long distances to ritual bone yards where they perish alone. Kuhn also dedicates this mix to his dog Mandy Burrows, who perished last Tuesday after living very happily for a long time.

William Basinski “d|p 1.1″ by +dB

This is clearly one of the best musical illustrations about life, death and the afterlife. And it was clearly by accident.

To quickly summarize the story: William Basinski was archiving tapes to digital but his archiving process was destroying already ancient tapes and he ended up recording the death of his self-made ambient loops. To add more to this, he ended up listening to the playbacks on 11 September 2001 and it became for him a personal soundtrack for the tragic events unfolding before his very eyes in New York City. Whether you see this as a 9/11 soundtrack, this is without a doubt a moving piece of work … all four discs to be precise.

Many Faces Out Of Focus (2011) PICT006 by Lapalux

Sounds move with curious steps in the music of Lapalux, the solo project of Essex’s Stuart Howard. His IDM and hip-hop influenced beat collages unfold like individual short stories, their layered tones playing into your emotions. The thud of bass pulses throughout his tracks, a steady stream of heartbeats that rise in and fall reaction to the excitement, the trepidation and the moments of calm reflection set by the marriage of vocal samples and experimental beatmaking. Listened to in succession, Howard’s material is a collection of individual moods, bound into a volume that could easily be titled, What It Feels Like To Be A Human.
